17 month Bug

Happy 17 months and 2 days to this toddler!

Honestly, there are no excuses.  The best pic I could get was where she was showing me how she washes her armpits.  Seriously.

Okay, so there's a bit too much flash and I was a bit too close.

This picture is okay too.

Half her face gone from kissing this thing.

Her entire face gone because she's climbing up and down the rocking chair.

Action shot.  Teaching from her desk.

Pretty good!

Ugh.  Mobility!

 Faking an ouchie!

Dear Buggy,

We are trying to keep up with you in more ways than one.  Not only are you the fastest kid we know,  always on the move, but you're learning so much every day and sometimes we feel like it's a race just to keep up with all the new things you've learned.  We're trying, though.  Despite knowing only a few words, you sure are a talker!  (As if that's a surprise!)  From the moment you wake up, until the second you fall asleep (and sometimes IN your sleep), you go nonstop, talking, pointing, telling, screaming, shouting, bossing, and supervising...without stopping to breathe!  We can tell that it's going to take some stamina to keep up with you and Mommy and Daddy have both got it when it comes to conversation!  :)

You are the most charming kid.  Sometimes too charming.  Sometimes when you do something we don't like, we let you know and you automatically chime in with, "Maaaaaa-meee!" or "Daaaa-deee!" Then you look right into our eyes, smile, and add one great big hug.  Please stop working your parents.  It makes disciplining you so hard sometimes and it breaks our hearts when we have to keep stern.  It is our job to teach you right from wrong after all... even in small situations.  When you're all grown up, we hope you will still willingly offer those huge hugs, arms wide open, with a huge smile on your face.

You are great at memorizing and remembering (especially people!).  You can name all of your friends at school and point them out to us.  When we are with friends, we review the names with you just once or twice and you've got each person memorized.  What an awesome memory!

Currently, you are putting yourself to bed, in your own crib, after we do your bedtime reading.  You usually fall asleep with a thousand and one things in your crib- anything from toys, to books, and blankets.  It's really amazing how much stuff you refuse to let go of, whether in bed, or walking around the house, or even heading out the door.  You love, love, LOVE to carry multiple items in your tiny arms and hands.  You've got some focus and determination because after all the stuff falls out of your arms, you keep trying until you can manage.  This is probably a trait you got from Daddy because Mommy has never seen someone as focused as he is...until she met you.

We love you, Bug.  You are so much fun and bring so much joy and purpose to our lives.  We are so blessed to have you as our daughter and even at just 17 months, we are already so proud of the person you are turning into.  Although your independence is killing us, it's also making us proud- proud that you know who you are even at such a young age.  (Just please don't kill us too quickly with that independence.)

Oh, you still follow the cat around, lecturing her to death, but I'm pretty sure she's accepted you as family.

Love,
Mommy and Daddy

God Bless,
Kat

4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 month Cub (9, 10, 11 too)

Clearly I've missed a few monthly updates of the Cub.  I apologize.  We were busy and life has literally taken us for a whirlwind ride.  To be really honest, I lost a lot of motivation to write these past few months because I've every time I started to write, all I could think to write about was my grandpa, Papang, how much I've missed him, and the endless tears that came out when I thought of him.  Every time I reflected back on the moments with my kids and my family, I seemed to cry, thinking of how much he's missed even in the short 5 months he's been gone.  After months of tears and prayers, I feel like I'm officially starting to feel like I'm healing.  While I know I may not heal completely, I can function without tears flowing from my eyes every moment of silence. Cubby has grown quite a bit (to say the least) since my 3 month update.  Here is the gentle giant's growth in months 4, 5, 6, and 7. This weekend, Cubby turned 8...

A Kinder Grad

Kindergarten can really take a toll on the parents.  (Yes, I meant to say parents.)  I knew we were in for a lot of activities and volunteering, but I did NOT know that it would become a second job to be an involved school parent.  I was told that by volunteering and being involved, it would give your kids (and their classmates) all the benefits.  At a private school (especially a Catholic private school), if there aren’t any volunteers, there aren’t many activities.  So ultimately, I knew I had to participate.  Could I have cut down on the activities I chaired or took part in?  Sure.  Why didn’t I?  [Insert long sigh here.]  Because in the end, I realized that I wasn’t sending my child to a private school because it was better than the public schools in the area.  (We actually have great public schools in our district.)  I was sending my child to a private Catholic school so she could learn about her faith.  The most imp...

9 years later...

This is the story of a dentist-in-waiting-nomad, Angela (a.k.a. my sister, "Ate"-[for those who don't speak Filipino, pronounced "a-teh"]) and a basketball playing of an engineer. Freshman year: boy sees girl and never speaks to her. Senior year: boy befriends girl's sister and gets his chance. A winter formal came along. Boy asked. Girl accepted. Boy meets girl's brothers (eek!), mom, and dad (EEK!). They danced. Girl moves to San Francisco, then San Jose. Boy moves to San Jose. Boy moves back to Valencia. Girl stays in San Jose. This summer, girl will move back to Valencia. Soon, boy and girl will finally be getting married! 9 years later! I have yet to express how excited I am that my sister and Louie are finally getting married. (Not that they needed to tie the knot to officially make Louie a part of our family.) For nine years, Louie has become another big brother to me and an Uncle "Looouuuwweeeee" to my nieces- always willing to d...
